Amsterdam is a great place for a festival in the summer. For a start, it nearly always enjoys sunny weather, the people are incredibly friendly and welcoming, the hospitality is legendary and the music – the most important aspect at every festival – is adhered to with the sort of scrupulous yet impeccable ease that always seems so prevalent at these sort of events at mainland Europe.

And Open Air Festival ticked all these boxes – and more. Despite only being three years old, it’s the sort of shindig that seems to have found a perennial existence in electronic music, not least because of the aforementioned excellence that seems to course through its every vain. To best sum up it up, Open Air is a festival where every last facet is considered with the punters in mind.

Which, suffice to say, was excellent news for us. Take the line-up for example, a broad palette that incorporated everything from A-list techno heavyweights to house music luminaries to dubstep dons. Regardless of your electronic music preferences, this was a festival that spoke to the visitor in no uncertain terms. Saturday 8th June saw everyone from Paco Osuna to Maththew Dear to Czt ‘n Dogz unleash excellent DJ sets, while Ellen Allien and tINI gave the festival a nice female edge and Gutin particular, wowed the crowd with his live set at my favourite stage, the Carnival stage.

Food and drinks tokens were the order of the day (as they very often are at festivals in mainland Europe), but on this occasion it all worked like clockwork: no queues, good vibes, good music and good weather. By the end of Saturday’s close, we already knew we were on to something special.

Sunday though, was dominated by house-filled vibes – as seems to be the case in contemporary house music. Each and every DJ seemed to bring their A-game too, with hometown heroes Gerd and Detroit Swindle really using the opportunity to showcase their wares to a particularly receptive and fervent home audience. Such was the wealth of goodness on offer that we never seemed to stay in the same place for too long, however, with Tiga and Tom Trago’s live set proving exceptions thanks to their wondrous energy and festival suited unleashing of techno and house bombs.

As was the case with the DJ’s sets, there seems to be something special about festivals that brings out the best in people. Whether it’s the vibes, the music, the all-round camaraderie, the fancy dress or the new friendships we formed, we left Amsterdam Open Air on Monday morning convinced we’d been been part of something extra special indeed. And with the benefit of hindsight, that’s most definitely proved to be the case.

Young German producer Ferdinand Dreyssig is quite evidently a talent worth treasuring – and a prolific, intricate and multifaceted producer to boot. Here, he perks up on rising Italian label Ct for Lunch for the ‘Post Symphonic’ EP; one that tells us as much about the continuing eclecticism of the label as it does the main man in question.

First up on the release is the luscious yet difficult-to-pigeonhole title number. Submerged in a cacophony of well-heeled, potent drums and heady sythns and strings, it twists and turns upside down and inside out – all the time keeping the listener guessing thanks to its penchant for the unpredictable.

”Indigo Skies” is more melncholic in structure, as it sways with a lackadaisical edge whereby the groove is very much at the forefront. The bongos, chimes and bootle-neck percussion meanwhile, only add to the sense that this is a record tailor-made for pitched-back, chilled-out, summer time dance floors. Recent Cocoon agency signing Alejandro Mosso – the brains behind the Sven Vath endorsed ”Somebody” injects the track with an added latin flair and a more weighty groove that doesn’t deviate too much from the original. Finally, Christoph Ahrens AKA Pazul takes the track to a similar place – albeit one that’s more ‘musical’ and based around a series of lush keys than it is a peak-time smasher. In all, a most excellent array of tracks that seem to have dropped at precisely the right time.

Currently wowing Pacha, Ibiza with his new weekly residency, ‘Wisdom Of The Glove’ Guy Gerber has managed to coax only the most interesting artists such as Mathew Jonson, Four Tet and John Talabot deep into his surreal, otherworldly rabbit hole.

Not content with planning for the freshest Ibiza residency out there and embarking on an international tour taking in dates throughout Japan, South America and Europe, the Supplement Facts boss travelled through nine countries whilst creating an entirely original album purely on his Sennheisers.

‘Who’s Stalking Who?’ clocks in at just over an hour, demonstrating Guy Gerber’s flair for silky productions, deep soulful beats and bubbling basslines. More in common with an expert sculptor, Guy has long been renowned for his effortless production and detailed craftsmanship; none more on display than here, the achievement made even the more impressive by making original music whilst on the move.

Hitting the UK for Krankbrother’s infamous Street Party on 22nd June with his own guest John Talabot, ‘Who’s Stalking Who?’ gives you just a taste of that biza magic that’ll be on show in London soon.

‘Who’s Stalking Who?’ will be available via Pacha Magazine’s covermount CD and Guy’s SoundCloud.

In a heavily flooded marketplace, creating an impression can be extra difficult. As a result, V/A packages seem to be cropping up with increasing regularity, the thinking perhaps, that at least one of the tracks on board will help yield spectacular results. No such issues surround Gramatica Paralela, however, an 11-track V/A offering from the fledgling Parallel label.

A fascinating snapshot of the label’s agenda, it all kicks off with Alejandro Vivanco’s ”Suit Sing”, whereby the Chilean saunters down the sort of drum-prevalent road made famous by the likes of Luciano and Ricardo Villalobos. The LP takes on numerous forms from here, mind, and it’s never one way traffic, just as Mecanica’s eclectic ”Warning” seems to symbolically suggest.

RifRaf’s ”Audio Clip” focuses firmly on the drums afterward, but it’s Nick McMartin’s difficult-to-pigeonhole ”Mother Tone” that comes in for the biggest praise from our side. Minimal but punchy and banging yet subtle, it’s a canny exercise in esteemed production techniques. Label heads Monkey Brothers’s ”Electronic Caffe” is another that’s worthy of note, as their delicate and perfectly poised track gives the record an extra primed polish.

Omer Grinker’s ”After All” is exactly the sort of assured follow up we expected after his last record, ”Make Sense” (also on Parallel) was received with great fanfare. Further highlights arrive from Gwen Maze and Dop’q in particular, and Javier Orduna & Inigo Orueazabal do a sumptious job at lending the package another unsuspecting edge. Top notch stuff from a label that seems set for great things to come.

The EP is out now and can be downloaded by clicking here

Since the unveiling of Unknown at the start of 2013, it has proven to be one of the most dominant [...]

Since the unveiling of Unknown at the start of 2013, it has proven to be one of the most dominant forces on the Croatian horizon. Already equipped with a healthy programme of cutting edge live and electronic artists such as Jessie Ware, Disclosure, Richie Hawtin, The Horrors and Henrik Schwartz, the founders of Unknown now announce an additional five heavyweight artists to the bill and launch a brand new website. DJ acts Maceo Plex, Oneman and John Talabot will join live performances from London Grammar and Dutch Uncles in one of the most diverse and impressive line-ups of the summer. A new website complete with improved booking system is live today at unknowncroatia.com to facilitate purchases of all accommodation at the debut Unknown event.

Global techno star Maceo Plex tops the bill. Never before has an artist coined a sound as successfully and the past three years have seen Eric Estornel AKA Maceo Plex become one of the most in demand DJs on the circuit, with his Ellum Audio label providing an anthemic soundtrack for many dancefloors across the world.

John Talabot is a prominent Spanish luminary. His 2012 album has awarded him a deserved revival in the public eye and this special DJ show promises to be one of the highlights of Unknown’s debut event. Also on the DJ side of the proceedings, the dexterous Oneman will be onside to perform his genre breaking tactics. Infamous for his Rinse FM show and fabric 64, Oneman is a truly unique artist that continues to bend the rules.

Playing live will be the new cinematic pop trio London Grammar, tipped as the next big acts to blow by BBC Introducing and garnering comparisons with Florence & The Machine and The XX. Dutch Uncles will also perform fresh from the release of their debut album. Both artists join Unknown ahead of major tours this winter and offer a unique opportunity to witness raw and trailblazing artists riding the early waves of their success. Yet more live artists are set to be announced soon for Unknown.

The Unknown website relaunched today with an improved booking system to facilitate all accommodation requirements. Everything from camping to five star luxury apartments is available on the inclusive site in Rovinj, Croatia, where you can expect to find secluded forest areas, strung hammocks and secret stages.

As the debut Unknown event draws closer and curiosity grows on the unique and new North Croatia location the organisers exclusively reveal this video to give a hint of what’s in store:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnS-po65OqQ

Unknown is a new event from the experienced teams behind Hideout Festival, The Warehouse Projectand Field Day. With over seventy-five artists and over twenty club and brand partners in total performing between 10th-14th September 2013, they have successfully co-created an inspiring and diverse event concept in the utopian setting of Croatia that continues to stimulate educated music lovers worldwide.

How do DJs imbue compilations with the sense of worth, majesty and mystery that they once had in the pre-internet [...]

How do DJs imbue compilations with the sense of worth, majesty and mystery that they once had in the pre-internet age? The smart ones pour enough time, originality and exclusivity into their mixes to justify a purchase and to ensure that their effort stands the test of time. On his Balance mix, Guy J achieves both in magnificent fashion.

One of John Digweed’s brightest discoveries of the last decade, the Israeli producer grew up listening to the Bedrock boss’ groundbreaking Northern Exposure mixes and Transitions radio show. “I think this is how I learnt about building up a mix” he says. “He can do intro, build-up, give you a taste of peak time and then finish it, and you can listen again and again and enjoy the mix each time. It’s like a good movie.” It’s this focus on progression and evolution that makes Guy J’s music and sets so captivating, straddling the divide between deep progressive house and dubby techno with stunning flourishes of euphoric melody. On this incredible Balance mix, he has taken the essences of some of his best-loved tracks by other producers and filtered them through the prism of his own stunning sound, re-editing and reconstructing them to create a truly original listening experience.

“The idea of my mix for Balance is not to give just a regular mix of 80 minutes” Guy explains, “but to create, write and produce it.” This meant sourcing original tracks from friends and colleagues to work his magic on, as well as editing tracks less close to home and seeking permission to use them in his own special way. “I wanted to make it more special; to give the people who listen to it something that will be worth the time and creativity. Remaking tracks and remixing all thirteen of them to give a story is a hard mission – but I used every second I had to produce these tracks and to listen to what I had made.”

A truly epic reverbs embalms the yearning, ethereal strains of Flowers & Sea Creatures’ collaboration with DJ Yellow, No One Gets Left Behind, as the mix gently, beatlessly begins (think Radiohead dosed up on a Valium in a vast church). We effortlessly segue into the lush textures and exotic instrumentation of Roger Martinez & Secret Cinema’s Menthol Raga, deep bass and a warm beat brought gradually into play. From these monotone depths emerge the sorrowful bassline and heady atmospherics of Henry Saiz’s Sante Fe, and a bubbling interpretation of a Radio Slave accapella that heightens the energy considerably. Juan Deminicis’ Once Upon A Time tempers the mood back down, setting up the seductive melancholia of Navar’s Phases Of Grief for maximum impact, all brooding bass and emotive riffs.

Pezzner’s mix of Pavel Petrov’s Fever gets amped up into a hypnotic, head-nodding slice of deep tech house, moving perfectly into the rich strings and shimmering keys of Charles Webster’s Lanoiraude remix. Just as the energy is swelling, we’re pulled back down once again into the sumptuous sea of melody and warmth of his Dactilar Day One edit, the beat simmering down to near-nothingness. Again, it’s an expertly implemented lesson in contrast, the soaring motifs and heady vocals of Echomen’s Perpetual blossoming out of this pause for breath. Guy Matnzur’s I’m Your Country ramps up the momentum once again with hard-hitting bass interspersing heavenly breakdowns, and WOW’s Killa providing a glistening penultimate slice of big room splendour. Robert Babicz’s Duba provides the dreamy swansong that rounds the mix off; another beatless beauty laden with spine-tingling emotion.

It’s all over too soon, demanding rapid repeat listening. It’s a mix to get lost in, and whose constituent parts are deftly blurred into the bigger picture. “I think the tracks could be played in a club” concludes Guy, “but the way it’s all edited and mixed is more home-friendly… and of course, all music on this compilation has never been released.” This magical mix is sure to be a strong contender for one of 2013’s finest, and has everything going for it to live on well beyond those end of year lists.

ENTER.Main
Hawtin will play each and every week, joined by M-NUS artists, friends and collaborators. Once again, ENTER.will repeat the groundbreaking swap concept introduced in 2012. Sven Väth and Luciano will return to ENTER. on August 22 and September 05 respectively. Building on the success of the swap concept, ENTER. can also reveal two new swaps for this season - Loco Dice (July 11 and September 19) and Paradise creator Jamie Jones (August 08). Richie Hawtin will reciprocate the gesture with scheduled performances at Cocoon (Amnesia), Ushuaia and Paradise (DC10). Across the 13 weeks, guests will also be treated to live performances from Gaiser, Matador, Audion and Julian Jeweil, five scheduled performances from ENTER. resident Paco Osuna plus appearances from Dubfire, Marcel Dettmann and Ben Klock (exclusive B2B),Ambivalent, Christian Smith, Victor Calderone, Hobo and Hector.

August 01 sees Visionquest descend for the only Ibiza date of their exclusive ‘Thirteen’ concept. Taking place in the old ENTER.Sake bar, the night features experimental electronic music all curated by Hawtin. He states: “I take great pride and enjoyment in bringing new artists to Ibiza for the first time, and this additional room has allowed me to showcase some of the really innovative artists of the moment who would maybe not get to play on the island. The island has evolved a lot, but there are still so many people around the world who need convincing that the Ibiza is for them. This is a step in the right direction.” ENTER.Mind welcomes Demdike Stare, Andy Stott, Recondite, Function, Vatican Shadow, Lee Gamble, Etapp Kyle, Tommi Sahko, Claro Intelecto and many more.

Fans of multi-layered and tightly woven tech house will already be familiar with Edgar de Ramon, and here he serves up another fine EP that will likely have many more people taking note. It comes on the Kiara imprint which has been his home before, and is bolstered with a solid remix from Minus’s Barem.

The Spaniard’s style is one of great detail, with an almost indecipherable amount of percussive details interweaving with each other above loopy, slippery bass. That’s certainly the deal here anyway, on all three tracks: The first is Lighthouse, a non-stop affair that will have you dancing for hours on end. Barem remixes it into something a little heavier and even darker in his usually inimitable style before the flip side offers two more irresistibly tech-y tracks. First is Single right, which ducks and dives up and down through some shadowy back streets in the middle of a city, and the last is Secret Point, with plenty of off time drum frills and drum rolls, surging bass notes and a generally intriguing sense of textural groove. Another winning EP from de Ramon, then.

Steve Lawler’s move from Space to the islands newest underground establishment Sankeys last year was bold and significant news in itself. Now the next chapter in the proud journey of VIVa Warriors sees Steve Lawler return to bring more of the hedonistic party vibes that’s made him already a Sankeys legend – now VIVa Warriors is occupying the Sunday evening. Viva Warriors, – Viva Sundays.

Steve Lawler welcomes you to a deeply percussive affair well into the early hours of Monday morning, where the sound of VIVa Warriors defines the intimate Sankeys basement, or as many already claim to be Steve’s room, with an attitude and unified energy all of its own.

“Steve Lawler’s VIVa Warriors return to Sankeys Ibiza ready for another landmark season” – DJ Mag

With weekly packed dance floors, the VIVa Warriors crew left their own stamp of musical individuality on the island last year with an inspiring underground concept that plays homage to the 1979 cult thriller ‘The Warriors’.

“Cornerstones of Sankeys’ new-look programme, Steve Lawler and his talented troupe return for a second year” - Resident Advisor

With a true and deep understanding of the Ibizan dance floor, the VIVa boss had an amazing season behind the decks last year – if you have not experienced the energetic atmosphere Steve Lawler creates in the Basement, then you have not experienced Sankeys. Supported by one of the most hard working and promising new talents Darius Syrossian, who is an essential addition to the line-up, Lawler will lead the new 2013 VIVa Warriors takeover every Sunday this summer.

Up keeping with VIVa’s unstoppable new talent momentum, Detlef starts his weekly residency. As one of the labels most exciting new prospects, his production and past sets are clearly the work of a producer who has created a style that is unmistakably their own. Also to accompany the family outings will be the sub residencies from VIVa MUSiC new signings Philip Bader and Sante along with regulars Anek all playing a total of 6 times each.

“I’m super exited about this years Warriors in Ibiza. After last years party’s where the atmosphere was incredible I just cant wait to get back into my room into my booth and get together amongst friends in our musical home” – Steve Lawler

With Steve Lawler’s curation of electronic music, VIVa Warriors assembles an array of talent including Lee Curtis, Robert Dietz, Steve Bug and Rekids own purveyor of raw edged house music Radioslave; whom will join close VIVa label friends Guti, Livio & Roby, Franco Cinelli, to name a few.

The Viva Warriors 2013 season will run at Sankeys Ibiza from the 23rd of June until the 29th of September
